Buying guide (read before you buy)
A frontal is a strip of lace that runs the whole hairline, ear to ear, with hair hand-tied into it strand by strand. That is what separates a lace frontal from a closure: you can part anywhere across the front, sweep the hair back off your face, or wear a ponytail without a track showing. Both sizes are here, 13x4 and 13x6, on 100% virgin human hair, free part, so nothing is pre-set and the part moves whenever you want it to.
Ten textures across two laces, HD and transparent, in Brazilian, Indian and raw hair. Lengths run 14 to 22 inches depending on size and texture. The grid is grouped by size, 13x4 first, so you can settle the size question before you pick a texture.
How to choose the size, the lace and the length
Both sizes are thirteen inches wide, ear to ear. The difference is depth. A 13x4 gives four inches of lace back from the hairline, which is 52 square inches and covers a middle part, a standard side part, edges and baby hair, and most swooped styles. It is the one most people wear, and it is less lace to tint, cut and lay. A 13x6 adds two more inches of depth, 78 square inches in total, for a deep side part that starts far back on the head or hair pulled straight back off the face. That extra lace costs more time at the install and more money at checkout, and at Mayvenn the 13x6 comes in HD lace only.
HD lace is the thinner of the two. It is fine enough to sit into the scalp rather than on top of it, so most people can lay it with no bleaching and no tinting. It tears if you are rough with it, so cut with a light hand and do not tug at a lifted edge.
Transparent lace is sturdier. It blends with most skin tones on its own and survives more installs before it thins out, which makes it the easier one to learn on. On a deeper complexion, tint it a shade before you lay it. Transparent is a 13x4 option only.
Match the frontal to your bundles in texture and length. A 14-inch frontal blends cleanly with 14 to 18-inch bundles; buy longer if your install runs past 20. Pick the lace on handling, not on hair quality. The hair is the same virgin hair either way.
Questions people ask about frontals
What is a lace frontal?
A lace frontal is a hairpiece that covers the front third of your head from temple to temple, with individual hairs knotted into a sheer lace base. It replaces your natural hairline for the length of an install, so nothing of your own is left out to blend, flat iron or lay down every morning.
What is the difference between a lace frontal and a lace closure?
Coverage. A frontal spans the full hairline and lets you part anywhere across the front or pull the hair back. A closure is a small square that covers the crown only, so the part stays in one area and the hair stays down. A closure is faster to install and needs less upkeep; a frontal gives you the styling range. Every closure size sits on the closures page.
What is a lace front wig, and can I make one from these?
A lace front wig is a full cap unit with a lace frontal sewn across the front edge, so it goes on and comes off in one piece. Yes, these are the pieces stylists build them from: a frontal, a wig cap and matching bundles. If you would rather buy one finished rather than build it, that is what the lace front wigs page is for.
13x4 or 13x6 lace frontal?
Both are on this page, grouped separately. Both are thirteen inches wide; the difference is depth. A 13x4 gives four inches of lace back from the hairline, enough for a side part, a middle part and most swooped styles, and it is the standard for a reason. A 13x6 gives six, for a deep center or side part running further back, and for wearing everything pulled straight back. Buy the 13x4 unless your part starts behind the four-inch line.
How long does a frontal last?
The hair outlasts the lace. Lace thins where you glue, pull and bleach, so it is the wear point, not the strands. Take a frontal sew-in down at six to eight weeks, dissolve adhesive with remover instead of pulling, and wash the lace as carefully as the hair. Treated that way a frontal reinstalls several more times.
How do you install and wear one?
Braid your own hair flat, secure the frontal along the hairline, then cut the lace just past the hairline rather than flush to it. Pluck to break up the density and bleach the knots if you want them invisible. Leave the baby hairs long enough to lay.
- Two sizes: 13x4 and 13x6, both free part and hand-tied
- Lace: HD and transparent in 13x4, HD only in 13x6
- Ten textures: straight, body wave, loose wave, deep wave, water wave, curly, yaki straight, kinky straight, jerry curl and afro kinky curly
- Lengths: 14" to 22" depending on size and texture
- Colors: natural black, #1 jet black, #27 honey blonde, 1B/27 with dark roots and #613 blonde
- Brazilian, Indian and raw hair, 100% virgin
If you only want the thinnest lace, it is filtered down in HD frontals, and the sturdier option sits in transparent lace frontals. If a full hairline is more than you need, a lace closure does the same job with less upkeep. Buy your bundles in the same texture, and read how to apply a lace frontal before your first one. Frontals come back within 30 days of delivery: untouched for a full refund, worn for store credit, return shipping on you. See the return policy.
Frequently asked questions
Is the hairline pre-plucked?
The hairline on Mayvenn's lace frontals isn't pre-plucked, but it can be fully customized so that the frontal can fit your desired look.
Are the knots on the frontal bleached?
No, the knots on the frontals are not pre-bleached so that they can be customized to match your skin tone. Need help? One of our Mayvenn Certified Stylists can help you customize your frontal with quality, professional products.
Can I part a lace frontal anywhere?
Yes, anywhere inside the lace. A 13x4 gives you thirteen inches across the hairline and four inches back — 52 square inches of parting space. A 13x6 gives the same width and six inches of depth, 78 square inches, so a deep part can start further back on the head. Either way you can move the part along the whole front hairline.
How many bundles do I need with a lace frontal?
To achieve a full look with a frontal, you don't need as many bundles as you normally would. Usually 2-3 bundles will work for a frontal install—the longer, curly or textured hair, you may want 3-4 bundles to complete the look.
How long will a lace frontal last?
The longevity of your frontal depends largely on your care and maintenance at home. Making sure that it's properly detangled, the knots aren't overprocessed, and that it's protected from heat damage all help your frontal last throughout your entire install!
Can I re-use my lace frontal?
No, it's best to not re-use your lace frontal - unless you've used it to create a custom wig that you can take on and off. Getting a fresh frontal for each install ensures that your look will last!
Can I apply hot tools to my frontal?
Yes! Our frontals are made of 100% virgin human hair, so they can be styled exactly like your own hair. Blow dry it, iron it, curl it - just be sure to use a heat protectant spray!
