Human hair extensions come in four formats, and picking the format matters far more than picking the hair. Wefts sewn into braids, clip-ins you take out at night, wigs that go on in one piece, and loose bulk hair for braids. Each asks a different amount of time, money and commitment from you.

Which format suits you

Sew-in wefts

A weft is a curtain of hair sewn onto a seam and stitched into cornrows. Wefts give the most length and density for the money and stay in six to eight weeks, but they need a braid-down and usually a stylist. Three bundles cover a full head at 18 inches and under, four past 22. Start in virgin hair bundles and finish the part with a lace closure or a 13x4 frontal.

Clip-ins

Clip-ins go in in minutes and come out the same evening — no braiding, no thread, no adhesive. They are the lowest-commitment format and the only one that changes nothing about your own hair. The sets here are seamless: the hair is bonded to a thin polyurethane weft instead of a thick fabric one, so it lies flat and does not ridge under fine hair. Wigs

A wig is the whole install in one piece. Nothing is attached to your head, so it comes off at night, and your own hair stays braided underneath. It is the format for protective styling and for changing length or texture week to week. See human hair wigs.

Braiding hair

What are hair extensions?

Hair extensions are lengths of hair added to your own to build length, density or both. Human hair extensions are real hair, so they wash, take heat and take color; synthetic extensions are fiber and cannot take heat. Everything Mayvenn sells is 100% human hair, none of it blended with fiber.

How long do hair extensions last?

It depends on the format, not the hair. Clip-ins worn a few times a week and taken out at night last a year or more. A sew-in stays in six to eight weeks per install, and the same bundles go back in three or four more times if you take them down on schedule. What ends a set early is heat above 350 degrees, dry combing, and sleeping in clip-ins.

How much do hair extensions cost?

Three things set it: how much hair you need, how long it is, and whether someone installs it for you. A clip-in set is one purchase with no install. A sew-in needs three or four bundles plus a lace piece plus a stylist's time. Length is the steepest lever past 22 inches, because long hair from a single donor is the scarce part.

Do hair extensions damage your hair?

Extensions do not damage hair; tension and neglect do. The damage comes from braids installed too tight, glue at the root, wearing an install past eight weeks, and never washing or moisturizing what sits underneath. Installed at a reasonable tension and taken down on time, extensions protect your hair by keeping it braided and out of daily heat.
