How to choose your length and color

The natural black bundle runs 10 to 32 inches. The #2 chocolate brown runs 16 to 24.

Buy longer than you want to see. Length is measured with the hair pulled straight, and deep wave is a tight enough pattern that a 20-inch bundle hangs closer to 15 or 16 once the curl springs up. Two to four inches over your target is normal for this texture, and ordering short is the single most common mistake people make with it.

What is deep wave hair?

Deep wave is a deep, uniform S-pattern that repeats in tight rows down the length of the hair. It is more defined than a body wave and looser than a curl, so it reads as a full, patterned wave rather than a ringlet. On virgin bundles the pattern is steamed in, so it survives washing.

Deep wave or water wave?

Deep wave runs in an S. Water wave runs in a spiral, twisting around itself rather than folding side to side, which makes it look wetter and more irregular. Deep wave is the more uniform and easier of the two to keep defined; water wave has more of a natural, undone finish and tangles a little more at the ends.

How many bundles do I need for a deep wave sew-in?

Three bundles cover a full sew-in at 18 inches and under. Past 22 inches, buy four. A deep wave eats density as it falls, and three long bundles will look sparse through the middle. Adding a closure or a frontal does not change the count.

How long does a deep wave sew-in last?

Six to eight weeks in the hair. Past that the braids underneath start to matt at the base, and it is your own hair that pays for it, not the bundles. Taken down on schedule, one set goes back in three or four more times.

Why does deep wave get frizzy?

Dry detangling, almost every time. Detangle in sections with a wide-tooth comb from the ends up, and only when the hair is wet and slick with conditioner. Wash with sulfate-free shampoo, scrunch the water out rather than rubbing, air dry or diffuse on low, and use a leave-in and a light oil on damp hair. Bonnet or pineapple it at night, because friction on a pillowcase mattes the pattern at the nape.
