A 4x4 closure is four inches of lace in each direction — 16 square inches of parting space, set at the crown to close off a sew-in or finish a wig. It is the original closure size and still the most worn, because it covers a middle or side part with the least lace of any square closure. Less lace means less to cut, tint and melt, a faster install, and a piece that holds up through more take-downs.

How to choose the lace, texture and length

Pick the lace first. Transparent is the one to learn on: it takes rough handling, survives repeat installs and blends on its own on most skin tones. HD melts flatter with no bleaching or tinting, but it tears if you are heavy-handed, so it is the better buy when a stylist is laying it or the part is going to be seen up close. On a base this small the gap between the two is narrower than on a 5x5 or 6x6 — there is simply less lace to hide — which makes the 4x4 the one size where transparent is a first choice, not the budget one. Then match the closure to your bundles, not to your wish list: same texture, same natural black. Go the same length as your shortest bundle or one step under it. A 14-inch closure blends cleanly with 16, 18 and 20-inch bundles; the 18 and 20-inch closures are for longer installs, where the top layer needs the extra length.

What is a 4x4 closure?

What does a 4x4 closure on a wig mean?

It means the wig is built on a 4x4 closure instead of a frontal: a four-inch square of lace at the crown, with the rest of the cap made of wefts. You can part it anywhere inside that square, but the hairline in front of it is not lace, so it is worn parted and down rather than pulled back. It is the easiest wig to put on and the least lace to keep up with.

Which is better, 4x4 or 5x5 closure?

The 4x4 if your part stays put; the 5x5 if it moves. A 4x4 gives you 16 square inches of lace, a 5x5 closure gives you 25 — an inch more every way. Wear the same middle or side part every week and the 4x4 does the job with less to blend and a quicker install. Switch your part, wear it deep off center, or want to sweep the front back, and the 5x5 is worth the extra.

Can you do a side part with a 4x4 closure?

Yes, a side part set about two inches off center. What it will not do is a deep side part that starts out near the temple — the part runs off the edge of the lace. For that, step up to a 5x5, or to a 2x6 closure if what you want is a long part running front to back.

How many bundles do I need with a 4x4 closure?
