What is a half wig?

A half wig is a wig cap that covers roughly the back three-quarters of your head, with the front and top left open. Your own hair comes out through the open front, the wig clips in behind it with built-in combs and an adjustable band, and you blend your leave-out over the wig's front edge. There is no lace at the hairline, so nothing has to be bleached, plucked, cut or glued. The realism comes from your own hairline instead of from a lace install.

What are half wigs called?

Half wig is the common name. You will also see them sold as three-quarter wigs, drawstring wigs, flip-over wigs or leave-out wigs — all the same idea, differing mostly in how the cap fastens. A u part wig is the close cousin: same clip-in, leave-out principle, but the opening is narrowed to a U at the crown instead of running across the whole front.

How do you put on a half wig?

Braid or slick down the hair that will sit under the cap, and leave out about an inch to an inch and a half at the front hairline plus a little at the part. Set the wig from the back forward, anchor the combs, then tighten the drawstring or band until it sits snug without pulling. Comb the leave-out down over the front edge of the wig and style the two together so they read as one head of hair. Five minutes once you have done it twice.

What are the downsides of wearing a half wig?

Two, and they are worth knowing before you buy. First, the leave-out: the section you leave out is the section doing the blending, so it gets styled — often heat-styled — every time you wear the unit. Use a heat protectant, keep the iron under 350°F, and move where you take the leave-out from so it is not always the same inch of hair. Second, a half wig leaves more of your hair out than a u part or a headband wig does, which makes the blend more visible if your texture and the unit's texture are far apart. If you want a style that touches none of your own hair, a headband wig or a full lace wig is the better answer.

How much does a half wig cost?

Synthetic half wigs run $30 to $80 and look it. Human hair half wigs generally run $150 to $400 depending on length, density and hair quality. What is the difference between a half wig and a u part wig?

A u part wig is a modified half wig. The classic half wig leaves the entire front and top of your hair out, so you are blending along a long line. A u part narrows that opening to a U at the crown, so far less of your hair is out and the wig covers more of your head. Choose a half wig if you want the fastest install and the most of your own hair showing. Choose a u part if you want less of your hair exposed to heat.

Which texture blends the easiest?

Water wave, by a clear margin — a wave pattern breaks up the line where the wig meets your leave-out, so an imperfect blend disappears instead of announcing itself. Kinky curly is the only one you can wear with no heat at all, if your own texture sits in the 3B–4A range. How long does a human hair half wig last?

With normal wear and reasonable care, six months to a year — longer than a sew-in and longer than any synthetic unit. Co-wash it, air dry it on a wig stand, keep heat off the wefts, and store it in a satin bag rather than balled in a drawer. Because it comes off at night, it takes far less friction than a unit you sleep in.
