Four things, in order of how much they matter.

2. Cuticle direction. In cheap human hair, strands are collected from mixed sources and run in opposing directions. The cuticles catch on each other and the hair mats from the inside out. Hair sold as single-donor or double drawn is aligned, and behaves.
3. Dryness. Added hair gets no sebum from your scalp. Left dry for a week it roughens, and rough hair tangles. A water-based leave-in two or three times a week is not optional maintenance, it is the maintenance.
4. Curl pattern. Tighter curls have more surface area touching more surface area. A kinky curly will always mat sooner than a body wave, all else equal. This is physics, not quality — which is why the texture choice below is really a choice about how much upkeep you are signing up for.

Five things that keep boho braids from tangling
- Mist with a water-based leave-in two or three times a week, mid-length to ends. Dry hair is what mats.
- Wrap in satin every night. Cotton pillowcases pull moisture out and rough the cuticle up.
- Never sleep on damp hair. Damp curls compress overnight and set that way.
- Finger-detangle the curls from the ends up once a week. Do not take a brush to them.
