Most full-head installs take 3 to 5 packs of 100g human braiding hair. Boho braids at 20 inches take 4 to 5 if the whole braid is human hair, but only 1 to 2 if you are using human hair for the loose curls and synthetic for the braid body. Longer lengths, smaller parts and denser hair all push the number up.
Running out of hair three hours into an install is the worst possible time to find out you guessed low, and buying two extra packs you never open is money sitting in a drawer. How many packs of braiding hair do you need for a full head?
Here is the short version, assuming 100g packs and a full head:

If you are between two numbers, buy the higher one. Bulk hair keeps indefinitely in a sealed bag, and the leftover from one install is usually enough to refresh a hairline six weeks later.
How many packs of human hair do you need for boho braids?
This is the question that gets answered wrong most often, because there are two completely different ways to build a boho braid and they need very different amounts of hair.
If the entire braid is human hair, plan on 4 to 5 packs at 20 inches. You are braiding human hair down the full length and leaving pieces loose along the way, so every strand in the style is coming out of your bundles.
If you are braiding with synthetic and adding human hair curls, you need far less — 1 to 2 packs. The braid body is pre-stretched synthetic, and the human hair is only doing the job that matters visually: the loose, moving pieces.
The second method is what most stylists actually do, and it is the reason boho braids became a mainstream style rather than a luxury one. It is also where the quality argument lives. The braid body is under tension and mostly hidden; the loose curls are exposed to friction from clothes, bags and humidity all day. Synthetic curls mat within a couple of weeks. Human hair curls do not, and they can be washed, conditioned and detangled like your own hair.

Mixing colors into a boho install
The standard blend ratio is one pack of a lighter shade for every two of the base. For a four-pack install that means three packs of your base and one of color 27 honey blonde or color 30 auburn run through the front and crown. How many packs for knotless braids?
Knotless braids feed hair in gradually rather than anchoring it all at the root, which means they use slightly less hair per braid than box braids of the same size — but you make more braids, so the totals land close.
At medium parts and 20 inches, plan on 3 to 4 packs. Drop to small parts and it goes to 4 to 5, because you are making roughly half again as many braids. Jumbo parts can come in at 2 to 3.
The variable people forget is the taper. Knotless braids that taper to a fine end use noticeably less hair than braids carried at full thickness to the tip.
How many packs for box braids?
Medium box braids at 20 inches take 3 to 5 packs. Small box braids at the same length take 4 to 6. Jumbo box braids can be done with 2 to 3.
Box braids anchor at the root, so each braid starts at full thickness. That front-loads the hair usage compared with knotless, which is why the low end of the box braid range sits higher.
How many packs for faux locs, twists and afro kinky styles?
Faux locs need enough hair to wrap, not just to braid, so plan on 4 to 5 packs at 20 inches. Passion and spring twists sit lower at 3 to 4 because the twist consumes less length than a three-strand braid.
Afro kinky is the exception on this whole page. Coily hair compresses — a 3oz pack of tightly coiled hair occupies far less visual volume than 3oz of wave. Plan on 5 to 6 packs of afro kinky bulk hair for a full head at 20 inches, and more if you are building locs rather than twists.
How many packs for feather crochet and miracle knots?
Pre-separated feather crochet strands generally take 4 to 5 packs for full coverage. If you are recreating the look with bulk hair instead of buying pre-separated strands, work from the boho numbers above — you will be splitting and knotting the hair yourself, and the total weight going into the head is comparable.
Does braid size change how much hair you need?
More than length does. Halving your parting size roughly doubles your braid count, and while each braid is thinner, the total hair needed goes up because more braids means more starts, more overlap and more waste at the ends.
A rough working rule: jumbo parts use about two thirds of what medium parts use, and small parts use about one and a third times as much. Micro braids can run to 6 or 7 packs.
Does your own hair density change the count?
It changes it less than most people expect. The added hair is doing the volume work, so a person with fine hair and a person with dense hair getting the same braid size at the same length will land within a pack of each other.
Where density does matter is at the root. Very dense natural hair needs a bit more added hair at the base of each braid to blend cleanly, and very fine hair needs less added hair per braid to avoid tension. If you are somewhere in the middle, use the table as written.
What does a full head of human braiding hair actually cost?
Take a 20-inch boho install as the example, using our pricing:
- Human hair curls only — 2 packs of 20″ deep wave. Under $180 in hair, and the braid body is inexpensive synthetic.
- All human hair — 4 to 5 packs of 20″. Several hundred dollars in hair, but the entire install can be washed, worn again and reinstalled.
Neither number includes the stylist. Braiding labor is charged separately and varies widely by market and by braid size, with boho generally costing more than plain knotless because placing the curls takes additional chair time.
The reason the human hair math works at all is reuse. Synthetic braiding hair is thrown away at takedown. Bulk human hair, washed and stored properly, goes into a second install and often a third — which is covered in how long boho braids last and how to stretch them.
What if you run out mid-install?
Order all your packs at once, from one place. Hair from different production runs can differ slightly in tone and in how the wave falls, and the difference is most visible when a fresh pack goes in beside hair that has already been manipulated.
If you do have to add a pack partway through, work it into the back sections rather than the hairline, where any variation is least visible.
