Lace is the part of an install people put off buying and then rush. Decide on it before you order the bundles, because the piece has to match the texture and the color of the hair it sits in.

How to choose a size

Size is about how you part, not how much hair you get. Work up the ladder.

A 2x6 is a strip: two inches across, six deep. It gives a long front-to-back middle part on the least lace of any option, which makes it the easiest to blend and quickest to lay. Nothing else parts.

A 4x4 is the standard: sixteen square inches, enough for a fixed middle or side part, and the size most people should start on.

A 5x5 adds an inch in every direction, so the part can go deeper, sit further off center and move mid-week without re-installing.

A 6x6 and a 7x7 keep going, six and seven inches in every direction. A 7x7 gives close to frontal freedom without an ear-to-ear install. Both are HD lace.

A 13x4 frontal is a different piece: thirteen inches across the full hairline, four inches back, free part. It is the only option that lets you sweep the hair straight back or wear it up with no track at the temples.

Questions people ask about closures and frontals

What is the difference between a lace frontal and a lace closure?

Coverage. A closure covers the crown and gives one part in a fixed area. A frontal covers the entire hairline, so you can part anywhere, brush the hair back or wear it up. A frontal takes more install time, more plucking and more tension at your edges, which is why most people wear a closure.

HD lace or transparent lace: which should you buy?

HD if you want the least prep, transparent if you want the piece to last. HD is the thinner mesh — it melts flatter and most people lay it without bleaching or tinting, but it tears when handled roughly. Transparent is sturdier, blends on most skin tones as it comes, and survives more take-downs. The hair is the same virgin hair in both. You are choosing a mesh, not a grade.

Does a closure reduce the number of bundles you need?

No. Three bundles plus a lace piece covers a full head at 18 inches and under; four plus the piece past 22. The closure or frontal finishes the crown or the hairline. The bundles still have to fill the sides and the back.

How do you match a lace piece to your bundles?

Same texture, same color, bought at the same time. A 14-inch piece blends with 14 to 18-inch bundles. Do not dye a closure to match colored bundles — lace hair lifts differently from wefted hair, and the part comes out a shade off.

Making a lace piece last

The lace wears out long before the hair does, so treat it as the wear part. Cut just past the hairline rather than flush to it, and pluck a few knots at the front so the density does not read as a solid block. Take it down with adhesive remover rather than pulling, wash the mesh as gently as the hair, and keep an iron at 350 and below. Six to eight weeks is the window for a sew-in — longer, and the tension costs you your own edges.
