Let’s Recognize National Hair Loss Awareness Month

Did you know that August has officially been deemed National Hair Loss Awareness Month? It’s so critical to bring awareness and support to a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Anyone who’s suffered from hair loss knows that it can be a traumatic experience… it impacts self-esteem and confidence, and can often feel lonely or hopeless. It can be such an emotional journey, and we’re here to share information and foster conversation.

Understanding Hair Loss

Hair loss can occur for a variety of reasons, including genetics, medical conditions, hormonal changes, stress, and others. Common types of hair loss include:

  • Androgenetic Alopecia: Often referred to as male or female pattern baldness, this genetic condition leads to thinning hair and eventual hair loss.
  • Alopecia Areata: An autoimmune disorder that causes patches of hair to fall out.
  • Telogen Effluvium: A temporary condition often triggered by stress, illness, or significant life changes, resulting in excessive shedding.
  • Traction Alopecia: Hair loss caused by continuous pulling or tension on the hair, often from too-tight hairstyles or manipulation.

The Emotional Impact

Hair loss can significantly affect someone not just on a physical level, but on an emotional and mental one as well. It’s so important to be mindful of the ways we speak about and show up for others. Sometimes, just listening and providing a safe space is the best route.

Are Hair Extensions and Wigs An Option?

When applied properly, wigs and hair extensions can be used as a protective style or an extra boost of confidence. But, it’s also important to recognize that not everyone wants to - or feels comfortable - with these options. Finding a stylist who specializes in supporting clients with hair loss and who can do low-tension installs, glueless wig applications, and other healthy hair- and scalp-focused methods is key!

Always remember to seek the advice of a trusted medical professional if you’re experiencing any hair or scalp issues. Let’s all give each other, and our strands, a little extra love this Hair Loss Awareness Month.
