How Many Bundles Do I Need? Chart by Length, Closure and Frontal Size

Hair bundles laid side by side to show how many are needed for a sew-in

Mayvenn recommends 2 bundles for installs up to 14 inches and 3 bundles for 16 inches and longer, paired with a closure or frontal. Every Mayvenn bundle is 100 grams, and the closure or frontal covers your leave-out, so you don't need an extra bundle for it. The count is the same for every texture.

How many bundles do I need for my length?

Every Mayvenn bundle weighs 100 grams (3.5 oz). Use your longest bundle to read the chart, then adjust for texture.

Bundle length Straight, yaki, kinky straight Body, loose, deep or water wave Curly and kinky curly
10-14" 2 2 2
16-18" 3 3 3
20-22" 3 3 3
24-26" 3 3 3
28-32" 3 3 3

These counts hold with or without a closure or frontal. The low end of each range gives a natural, lighter fullness; the high end gives a full, heavy look from root to tip. If you are still picking a texture or a length to start from, the hair bundles guide covers all eight textures and what each one wears like day to day.

How many bundles do I need with a closure?

Two bundles plus the closure for installs up to 14 inches, and three bundles plus the closure at 16 inches and longer. Mayvenn now carries five closure sizes. The numbers are the lace measurements in inches, width by depth, and a bigger square buys more parting room, not fewer bundles.

Closure Lace area Lace at Mayvenn Parting room Bundles with it Choose it for
2x6 12 sq in HD and transparent 6" front to back, 2" wide 2 up to 14"; 3 at 16"+ A long, deep middle or side part with the least lace on your head
4x4 16 sq in HD and transparent A standard middle or side part 2 up to 14"; 3 at 16"+ The fastest install and the easiest lace to blend
5x5 25 sq in HD and transparent One inch more than a 4x4 in every direction 2 up to 14"; 3 at 16"+ Moving your part between installs
6x6 36 sq in HD only Six inches in every direction 2 up to 14"; 3 at 16"+ Frequent part changes and pulling the front back
7x7 49 sq in HD only Close to frontal range, still installs like a closure 2 up to 14"; 3 at 16"+ The most parting freedom you can get without a frontal

The trade-off at every step up is the same: more lace means more surface to tint and melt, and more time in the chair. Most people who move their part land on a 5x5 or 6x6. If you wear one part every time, a 4x4 or 2x6 does the job with less work — our closures and frontals guide shows what each size looks like laid flat against a head.

How many bundles do I need with a frontal?

Two bundles with a 13x4 or 13x6 frontal for installs up to 14 inches, and three bundles at 16 inches and longer. A frontal runs ear to ear across the whole hairline, so it covers what your leave-out used to, but the back and sides still need the same wefts.

Frontal Lace area Lace at Mayvenn Coverage Bundles with it Choose it for
13x4 52 sq in HD and transparent Ear to ear, 4" deep 2 up to 14"; 3 at 16"+ Visible edges, baby hair, and wearing the hair pulled back
13x6 78 sq in HD only Ear to ear, 6" deep 2 up to 14"; 3 at 16"+ A side part that starts further back and deep parts that never show a track

A frontal needs more upkeep than any closure: the perimeter has to be re-laid every one to two weeks, and the lace sits against your edges. If you part your hair and wear it down, a 6x6 or 7x7 closure gets you most of the parting range with a fraction of the maintenance.

Does a bigger closure or frontal mean fewer bundles?

No. The count is the same for every closure and frontal size: 2 bundles up to 14 inches and 3 bundles at 16 inches and longer. A bigger closure or frontal buys more parting room, not fewer bundles.

Why 6x6, 7x7 and 13x6 are HD only: the larger the lace, the more of it there is to hide. HD lace is the thinnest lace made and melts into the scalp without tinting. On a 4x4 or 2x6 there is little enough lace that transparent blends well; on 36 to 78 square inches it would show at the edges. HD is more delicate, so cut and lay it gently. If you are choosing between the two, we compare HD lace and transparent lace in plain terms.

Why does the count go up at 16 inches?

Longer hair has more head to cover from root to tip, and virgin hair tapers toward the ends because not every strand in a bundle reaches the full length on the tag. At 16 inches and longer, a third bundle keeps the ends as full as the top.

Want a layered finish? Mix lengths, for example 18, 20 and 22 inches. For a blunt, one-length cut, buy all your bundles the same length.

Does texture change how many bundles I need?

No. Mayvenn recommends the same count for every texture: 2 bundles up to 14 inches and 3 bundles at 16 inches and longer, with a closure or frontal. Curly and kinky curly textures shrink, so size up 2 to 4 inches in length instead of adding bundles.

Texture also changes the length you wear, which is different from how many you need. Length is measured stretched: deep wave wears about 2 inches shorter than the tag, and curly 3 to 4 inches shorter. Buy longer, not more.

How do I measure my head for bundles?

Run a soft tape measure around your head from the front hairline, above the tops of your ears, and around the nape. A standard medium wig cap is 22.5 inches, which fits most women. If you measure 23 inches or more, go to the high end of the chart; under 21.5 inches, the low end is usually enough.

What length closure or frontal should I get with my bundles?

Match the closure or frontal to your shortest bundle, or go one length shorter. With 18, 20 and 22-inch bundles, an 18-inch closure blends cleanly; a 22-inch closure would sit longer than the hair around it at the front. Buy it in the same texture and the same color as your bundles so the part matches the install.

How many bundles do I need to make a wig?

The same count as a sew-in: 2 bundles on a closure or frontal wig up to 14 inches and 3 bundles at 16 inches and longer. See our wig density chart for how each density level looks.

Which setup should you choose?

  • You want your own hair out front: a leave-out sew-in with 2 bundles up to 14 inches and 3 bundles at 16 inches and longer. Shop virgin bundles
  • You wear a long middle part and want the least lace: 3 bundles plus a 2x6 closure.
  • You want the classic, quickest install: 3 bundles plus a 4x4 closure.
  • You move your part between installs: 3 bundles plus a 5x5 closure.
  • You change your part often or pull the front back: 3 bundles plus a 6x6 or 7x7 HD closure.
  • You want edges, baby hair and ponytails: 3 bundles plus a 13x4 frontal. Shop frontals.
  • You want a deep side part with no track showing: 3 bundles plus a 13x6 HD frontal.
