Besides the performances, one of my favorite part of award shows is to tune into the red carpet pre-show for a preview of the fashions. Thankfully, those who walked the red carpet at the American Music Awards did not disappointment. Stars showed up in their absolute best and covered all trends and classics, ranging from the usual gowns to even more contemporary looks such as tailored suits. Let’s take a look at some of the fashion hits on last night’s carpet:
Tracee Ellis Ross
As the AMA host, Tracee brought her A-Game. I couldn’t count the number of outfit changes but I do know that all of her looks paid tribute to the African-American experience and were created by African-American designers, probably the first for an AMA host. Prior to the show, she tweeted: “I’ve featured black designers in all of my @AMAs press looks, and will do the same for all my show looks tonight!” Some outfits were mirrored by the film Black Panther with various colorful patterns. Others were more traditional with full hair, jumpsuits and sleeveless dresses; they were reminiscent of her mother, another fashion icon, the great Diana Ross. She even advocated for viewers to vote through her style by rocking a t-shirt with the slogan “I am a voter.”
Cardi B
I normally take the “less is more” approach, but Cardi effortlessly and beautifully pulled off this excess of floral ensemble. She gives off a nice inspirational mix of Celia Cruz combined with Selena for this look. I love the corset around the stomach and how it transforms to a princess style ball gown at the bottom. The added split up the leg gives it a sexier and more adult feel. It looks like something you could buy off the street in Barcelona’s fashion district. She looks stunning.
Mariah Carey
You can always count on Mariah for a good evening gown. She must have one in every color, style, cut and pattern. It’s become her signature look. Mariah opted for classic black sheer with beading. Although it wasn’t the most daring, the fit along with the sheer adds a little pizazz to the overall look. I would have preferred a different hairstyle from Mariah, maybe an updo because having her hair down could’ve clashed with this look. But, as always, she pulled it off.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez is someone who knows what looks good on her body and stays true to what works for her. Keeping the momentum going with her usual plunged neck line, split, and heel always does to trick for her! Everyone cannot pull off the color pink - especially when you are a woman of a certain age; it can come off as sophomoric. But, this look is a killer from head to toe. By adding minimal jewelry and a simple updo, the focal point of the look is her dress and amazingly toned body. She never disappoints. 49 where?!
Marsai Martin
Always age appropriate in her clothing, Marsai looks both adorable and sophisticated. The braided hair adds a unique flair to the overall look and I love the confidence she is exuding with her hand on her hip and leg out to give the dress form. This dress isn’t the only thing sparkling! Werk Marsai!
Chloe x Halle
How did they make oversized frocks look so good? They look like two Egyptian goddesses. The colors compliment their skin tones well and I enjoy the simplicity of their looks. Their locs of course add another layer of class.
