2020 Summer Braid Trends

2020 Summer Braid Trends

If the 90-degree weather is not an indication, summer is finally here. After months of quarantine, the COVID restrictions have lifted in most cities and millions of people are now able to partially resume everyday activities. For most women, the first thing we decided to do was finally get our hair tended to. If you’re like me, you were shocked at just how hot it was out after being inside for most of the last few months.

With heat like this, the only thing I want in my hair are braids. They are easy and cool. The last thing I want to worry about in the smoldering heat is having hair on my neck. With braids, I can put my hair in a ponytail, full or partial, or even wear them down and it’s not as annoying. I also know that my hair is protected. Thankfully, there are so many style options to choose from.

Here are the most popular braiding options for your semi-quarantined summer 2020.

Multi-colored faux locs

Faux locs

Faux locs have been in style non-stop, but the added color adds a new flare to them. There was a time where just one “unnatural” hair color was deemed unacceptable. But now, a pop (or a few pops) of color is the way to go. No one is opting for a regular brown or black color pattern for their locs. They are adding in hues of green, yellow, red, pink, and orange...sometimes all at once. It’s a fun and bold look. Despite the variety of color, no two hairstyles look the same, which is always a plus. You can go for an ombre look with one basic color as a start that blends into other shades - or, you can go all out with a rainbow-inspired style. The choice is yours!

Shoulder-length faux locs

Another option for faux locs that work well for the summer weather is shoulder length. They are easy to manage and there are still a myriad of styles you can get away with, switching your look up almost daily if you choose. This option also shapes your face well and, for many, appears the most natural out of the loc options.

Bohemian box braids

Something about the bohemian box braid style just screams “I’m a Black woman who sages weekly and is connected to all things earthly” and I love it. The bohemian look unleashes your inner goddess, exudes peace, and is sexy at all once. It’s also a classic look, with a real throwback to the 60s and 70s vibe.

Two cornrows

Yes, they’ve made a comeback. I’m not sure if quarantine is to blame, or the fact that this heatwave is unlike anything I’ve ever felt before but the classic two cornrows have resurfaced. The style is easy, and can be done with your natural hair or extensions. It’s also versatile, good for a day to night transition. The flexibility of the style allows for an overall cute vacation look (under COVID restrictions of course). Some are opting for fancier options with added bundles on the end, with curl patterns and the slicked baby hair - while others thug it out the old fashioned way. Either way, there’s an option that works for the style and swag you’re going for.
