How to choose lace, texture and length

The upside of HD is invisibility with almost no prep, and it matters more on a frontal than on a closure: a frontal runs thirteen inches across the most visible part of your head. Thicker lace shows at the edges in daylight and on camera. HD does not.

The cost is durability. HD tears if you handle it roughly and thins faster where you glue and pull. Cut it with a light hand, take it down with adhesive remover rather than force, and never tug a lifted edge. If this is your first frontal, transparent lace is more forgiving to learn on. You are choosing a mesh, not a grade — the hair is the same.

What does 13x4 mean on a lace frontal?

Thirteen inches wide by four inches deep. The thirteen runs ear to ear across the hairline; the four is how far back the lace goes, which sets how deep a part you can take. It is the standard frontal size and covers a middle part, a side part, a side sweep and a pulled-back style.

What is a frontal wig, and how is it different from a lace front?

They are the same thing from different angles. A frontal wig is built with a 13x4 lace frontal at the front of the cap and wefted hair behind it; lace front is the general term for any wig with lace at the hairline. A frontal bought on its own, like these, is the piece that goes into that cap — or straight onto your own braids for a frontal sew-in.

A frontal covers the whole hairline, a closure only the crown. A 4x4 or 5x5 closure gives one fixed part and an hour of work. Is a 13x6 HD lace frontal better than a 13x4?

Laying it

Pluck the hairline first. A frontal comes denser than a real one, and that density is what reads as a wig across a room. Work a few knots at a time from the front row back, and stop sooner than you think. Cut the lace just past the hairline rather than flush against it, and let the adhesive set before you style — most bad melts are a rushed set, not bad lace.

Treat the lace as the wear part: wash it as carefully as the hair, keep an iron at 350 and below, and take a frontal sew-in down at six to eight weeks.
