Chances are, you’ve seen BB and CC creams as you stroll through the aisles at Target or when you shop your favorite brands online. How could you not? It seems that every major makeup brand offers both BB and CC creams. But, what are these creams? What’s the difference between them, and should either of these be your next beauty purchase?
BB and CC creams are essentially lightweight alternatives to your standard foundation. There are days when we just don’t want to go through the hassle, and possibly lengthy, process of makeup as usual (hello lazy Sunday), but we still want to look pulled together enough to answer the door or not feel self-conscious when your neighbor stops by to say high. Not so long ago, tinted moisturizers were really the only option for barely-there makeup, but now our choices have expanded quite a bit.
What are BB creams?
BB creams (also known as beauty balms or blemish balms) are lighter than foundation but thicker than a tinted moisturizer. So while they tend to provide more coverage than a tinted moisturizer, they don’t have the heavy, cakey feel that often accompanies foundation. Moreover, BB creams are often chock full of antioxidants, and many even contain sunscreen. They definitely do their part to protect your skin from free radicals, pollution, and any further sun damage.
When should you use a BB cream?
Opt for a BB cream when your skin is feeling less than perfect or when you feel like skipping the heavy foundation.
What are CC creams?
CC creams (also known as color corrective or color control) differ from BB creams when it comes to texture. While it may seem counter-intuitive, CC creams are lighter than BB creams, but they still offer foundation-like coverage. The main purpose of CC creams, however, as the name implies, is “correction.” The better CC creams will work to even out your skin tone, reduce blotchiness, and fade hyperpigmentation. CC creams are great for women who want to cover imperfections and treat their skin at the same time, but don’t want a full face of heavy makeup.
When should you use a CC cream?
Again, opt for a CC cream when you need a break from heavy foundations or when you need a better color corrector. On days where your skin feels blotchy and red, a CC cream could be your best bet.
And there it is, the mysteries of BB and CC creams solved. Now you don’t have to skip or scroll past these beauty products because you don’t know what they are. You can make an informed decision and choose the product that’s right for your skincare needs — and your mood.
