I was thrilled at the idea of summer 2020 and had several big trips and excursions planned. I was mixing it up with a few of my favorite spots in the US, trying new places, and of course an international trip or two. But by early March, all of my vacation plans were put on hold, indefinitely, thanks to COVID. I was crushed, to say the least.
After moping around for a few days, I started to conjure up a few ideas that were deemed suitable for the times we live in. I refuse to sit in the house all summer and let precious time go by. As more restrictions were lifted, I discovered that there were plenty of things to do locally, or within driving distance, that would equate to just as much fun as I’d originally planned.
So if you’re not one to let COVID stop you from enjoying life, here are a few ideas to get you out of a funk and make the best of what current times have to offer.
Kent Island, MD
If you’re on the east coast and are looking for a beach option, meet Kent Island. It’s Maryland’s hidden gem. While locals are aware, most out of towners have no idea that this shore town exists. Right in the middle of Annapolis and Baltimore, Kent Island is a quaint town equipped with outdoor dining options, tiki bars, and several beaches to choose from. It’s also a boating town, with rentals available. And of course, the seafood that Maryland is known for is at your leisure. Take it from me, Maryland is my favorite state in the U.S. and Kent Island’s seafood is unmatched. Whether you are there with your mate, on a girls’ trip, or with family, Kent Island has something to offer everyone.
Great Falls, MD and VA
With international borders closed to the U.S. amid COVID, many of us are unable to see some of the great wonders of the world. If you’re interested in nature and are in awe of falls, Great Falls in Maryland and Virginia may be the perfect place for you. It’s an amazing and picturesque site. There’s a trail for hiking and a multitude of other outdoor activities to partake in. Lots of local parks are nearby to enjoy. Get your phones ready for breathtaking Instagrammable photos that will have your followers envious.
Rent a boat or yacht
Looking for luxury? A few hours on a boat or yacht will give you Miami Vice vibes. Grab your girls, champagne, and matching swimsuits and head to a nearby town that has rentals available. You can lay atop of the boat or yacht and sunbathe, sit idle and sip on your libation or jump in for a swim (wearing a life jacket of course). Cruise at your pace while taking in God’s natural creations and have your camera on deck to capture it all.
Block party/BBQ
I’m not sure if block parties pop where you’re from, but in Philly and New York, they are a staple. It’s a meetup of all ages with the street blocked off for old school activities. Kids jump rope and play tag while adults grill and drink jungle juice, all the while the DJ is spinning classics and current hits as the old heads wobble in the middle of the street. Block parties are an all-day function, typically lasting until a little before midnight, so there’s no need to rush to get there. Just make sure you wear a mask.
Road trip
Now is the perfect time to take that road trip you’ve always wanted to do. For me, just getting out of my city is always a plus, even if I’m going two hours away or to a neighboring state. Grab a girlfriend or your mate and put the sunroof down as your favorite 90s tunes navigate you to your destination. Make a few stops along the way to local attractions and to grab a bite to eat. Memories from a road trip will last a lifetime.
