How to Achieve Camera-Ready Hair for Your Holiday Portraits

How to Achieve Camera-Ready Hair for Your Holiday Portraits

For many of us, the holiday season means taking a TON of photos. With all of the candid pictures, Instagram snaps, and family portraits, it’s essential to have a go-to camera-ready look for the holidays. Camera-ready hair needs to be two main things: healthy-looking and beautifully styled. Here are a few tips for taking gorgeous holiday photos that you’ll love for years to come.

Stick to your wheelhouse

Let’s face it – some hairstyles don’t quite translate the same on-camera. We’ve all had that moment when we see a photo of ourselves at an event and realize that our creative new hair-do looked completely awkward from the back, or went limp or sideways after an hour.

To avoid this situation, stick to the hairstyles that you’re confident in. Are you a pro at sleek ponytails? The queen of the high bun? Which hairstyle makes you feel like the best version of yourself? Do it and do it well, honey.

Practice makes perfect

Alternatively, if you’re determined to try a brand new hairstyle on-camera, make sure to practice it at home a few times until you nail it. In other words, turn this new and improved hairstyle into one of your new go-tos.

Start with healthy hair

You, too, can be one of those girls with the insanely bouncy, shiny hair who look like an ad for deep conditioner. There are definitely ways to bring out the shine in your hair, but it’s hard to make hair lookhealthy when it’s actually really damaged.

This is a great time to deep condition, “dust” your split ends away, and do a hot oil treatment to retain as much moisture as possible.

Minimize frizz

If you’re rocking natural hair or curls, start by defining each curl with a twist-out, braid-out, or Flexirod set. Using a Wet brush to detangle your hair is also helpful for definition. Use a moisturizing pomade and/or gel to set your style, and make sure to keep your hair wrapped until it’s dry or use a blow dryer with a diffuser.

If you’re wearing straight hair, you can reduce frizz by conditioning thoroughly and letting your hair air-dry most of the way before blow-drying. Use a frizz control cream to tame flyaways, and only use alcohol-free hairspray.

Make your hair shine

The more shine, the better. Products that promote shine include hair oil, leave-in conditioner, glossing conditioner, and pomade. Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey Shine Pomade is a common favorite for leaving curls glossy. You can also use a shine spray, like Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine.

Also, even if you don’t usually use hair gel, try applying it to your hair part. This will create extra shine where it counts – and keep your strands in place – without making your hair crunchy.

For another level of shine, you can also use a clear hair glaze.

Which tips will you be using to create your picture-perfect holiday style?
