How TikTok Has Changed the Hair Industry

TikTok has truly changed the way we consume media. From fashion videos and hair tutorials to life hacks and dancing videos, TikTok has quickly become the most popular social media app. Black women have been taking over the app and going viral for hair and makeup tutorials. Many Black women have posted videos of how they lay down their wigs, doing box braids, twists, and natural hair tutorials. Black women even took over the Farah Fawcett 70s style hair trend, showing off their bouncy and retro style curls. Over the course of the past year or so, Black women have continuously been using TikTok for their hair and beauty trends.

Black men have also been continuously going viral on TikTok as well. Many Black men have gone viral for showing off their locs and other beautiful hairstyles. They have also gone viral for unique hairstyles and color in their hair, with many of them bleaching their hair and incorporating different colored patterns, such as hearts and circles.

TikTok users like @laetitiaky and @elsadesiree have gained a ton of followers posting hair tutorials and styles. Hairstylists have also gained traction on the app, showing off different hairstyles and braiding techniques that they use. Business owners of hair stores also use the app to promote Black hair care products such as bundles, wigs, edge control, bonnets, and more.

Ultimately, the app has changed the haircare industry tremendously. People look at TikTok for new styles, products, and tutorials on how to do their own hair. Hairstylists and business owners have been put on the map and gained followers, clientele, and customers all due to 60 second or less videos. The app has changed us - affecting not only how we consume media on a daily basis, but also how we decide to do our hair and which products we choose to purchase.
