Style Spotlight: Angela Bassett

Angela Bassett is 60.

SIXTY.

Let that sink in.

With arms toned to perfection, skin glowing as bright as the sun, and no wrinkle in sight, any time I see a photo of her, I increase the amount of time I spend in the gym weekly and my water intake. I am trying to do all that I can NOW to look half as good as she does when I am her age. I don’t want to have to dislocate a knee in my 50’s trying to catch up as I stare at old photos of her.

When I saw her on Instagram twerking, bending it low and doing backbends at her 60th birthday with ease, I gagged. How dare she? To make matters worse, she did so with a fabulous red jumpsuit, 4-5 inch heels and Diana Ross inspired hair.

She’s pure perfection.

Thankfully, she recently gave the secrets to how she’s been able to stay in shape all of these years through diet and exercise in the video below:

Now, hopefully you took notes because I refuse to repeat the advice she gave and I have yet to follow it to the T, but, at least we have her formula.

Aside from being in shape, Ms. Bassett’s style goes well with her age...but, because she’s ageless, it doesn’t even matter. She can rock a pantsuit, a hip hugging bodycon dress or even have her belly showing...which she has flaunted proudly on red carpets recently for the world to see.

After baring her midriff in a sequined two piece on the red carpet for the premiere of “A Wrinkle In Time,” her stylist Jennifer Austin explained why that daring look was appropriate:

“I wanted Angela to wear something that would catch the light and shine like the stars in the night sky,” Austin says. “So when I found this look from Greta Constantine I knew it would be perfect! The teal, black and silver sequins danced and sparkled and created great movement and [captured] the feeling that I wanted for last night.”

Austin tells PeopleStyle that Bassett wasn’t hesitant about showing her midriff. “Angela is a beautiful, smart, elegant and most importantly confident woman with a youthful spirit,” Austin shares. “She embodies those things at all times and she works hard to keep herself together, so every now and then we like show it off.”

And Angela isn’t afraid of aging, telling Allure Magazine in 2017: “As we advance, 60 is the new 40, or 70 is the new 50. It keeps getting pushed. But you have to keep the stress down and the attitude hot.”

She’s a legend of not just beauty, but elegance, grace, and fierce fashions, proving that in your late 50s and 60s you can indeed wear booty shorts and a crop top effortlessly. Angela Bassett is world class style.

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite Angela Bassett style moments.
